This year’s conference centered on celebrating and redefining artistic intelligence — a unique system of perception, insight, creation, and decision-making that has driven innovation and societal evolution for centuries.

The Kyiv Circus Academy participated in thought-provoking discussions, interactive workshops, and collaborative exhibitions, showcasing how circus arts can contribute to a pluralistic vision of arts education. The Academy highlighted its pioneering role in blending traditional and contemporary circus techniques with interdisciplinary approaches, emphasizing the importance of creativity in fostering social inclusion, ecological awareness, and cultural dialogue.

The conference encouraged participants to expand their perspectives, experiment with new ideas, and collaborate on transformative solutions in fields such as politics, ecology, ethics, technology, and sustainability.

Just to clarify, think of it as the circus world’s equivalent of the “Oscars”!

The festival starts on January 19, 2024, graced by the presence of Her Serene Highness Princess Stephanie of Monaco.

This festival is the grand finale of the centennial celebration of Prince Rainier III (1923-2023), who founded the festival, and also commemorates 50 years since its inception (1974-2024)!

Our Academy proudly joins the festivities as a partner and participant this year! Under the guidance of our alumna, partner, and friend, Irina Herman, students and graduates from the Academy, part of the “Bingo” theater, are taking center stage to open and close the festival!

The project aimed to explore the convergence of artistic expression and technology, with students leveraging their diverse backgrounds to push the boundaries of creativity. The participants, hailing from both the Kyiv Circus Academy and the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technologies, showcased their talent, teamwork, and innovative thinking as they tackled the challenge of visualizing abstract thoughts.

The successful completion of nine distinct projects stands as a testament to the power of cross-cultural collaboration and interdisciplinary education. The students not only exchanged artistic techniques but also embraced the opportunity to learn from one another’s unique perspectives. As a result, the final video installations reflect a harmonious blend of Polish and Ukrainian artistic sensibilities.

We are very happy with this inaugural collaboration, envisioning a future marked by many more such enriching partnerships. In the spirit of sharing the outcomes with a wider audience, the projects will soon be made available for public enjoyment. The success of “Visualising a Thought – CREATIVITY” underscores the potential for fostering international connections in the pursuit of artistic innovation and cross-cultural understanding.

We are excited to announce the Call for Contributions for the ELIA Biennial Conference on 20-23 November 2024, hosted by Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti (NABA) in Milan, Italy. We invite students and staff from the Ukrainian community to submit their applications and become part of the conversation.

ELIA Biennial 2024 explores the theme “Arts Plural”, challenging participants to define artistic intelligence and ways in which it shapes the current reality – and what structures are necessary for artistic intelligence to play a role in addressing planetary problems.

Who can apply?

Lecturers, researchers, artists, senior managers, administrators, international officers, and supporting and technical staff members, are welcome to submit proposals. Artists, cultural organizations, researchers, arts and cultural sector professionals, producers, curators, makers, and technical staff are all welcome to apply in collaboration with ELIA member institutions.

We specifically welcome student-led contributions

and endeavor to support selected students with bursaries to make their trip to Milan possible.

• Complete the following form.
• In the form, you will be asked to submit the following information: your contact details, presentation title, format description (if you wish to submit an academic paper, please note that, if selected, you will have to provide the final version one month before the start of the conference. The paper will be published and shared with participants before the event), discipline(s) (artistic and/or non-artistic), a description (max. 300 words), a two-minute video presenting the idea for the contribution, biography, and technical requests.

To participate in the event, you have to register 

ELIA’s UAx Platform is proud to announce an online symposium Artistic Research and Beyond, organised in partnership with the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, Lviv National Academy of Arts, A. V. Nezhdanova Odesa National Academy of Music, and Kharkiv I.P. Kotlyarevskyy National University of the Arts.

The online event spans four weeks from 14 November to 5 December 2023 at 15:00 CET (Prague time) / 16:00 EET (Kyiv time). The online event will feature four sessions, taking place each Tuesday, with experts from different art institutions in Ukraine, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Sweden. Each session, lasting 1.5 to 2 hours, will be comprised of thematic presentations, followed by participant discussions to share experiences and pose questions.

The symposium aims to enhance doctoral programmes and artistic research practices in Ukraine. It acts as a platform for exchange of good practices around the crucial aspects of doctoral programmes, including admission processes, curriculum development, doctoral supervision, artistic project examples, preparation, presentation, defence, and international and inter-institutional cooperation.

The symposium will discuss international practices in two types of doctoral art studies:

1. Doctoral programmes based on artistic practice (including artistic research), technological research and material research.
2. Doctoral programmes grounded in theory and theoretical approaches to art and artistic research.

The online symposium is open to everyone involved in doctoral studies in higher arts education in Ukraine, namely doctoral supervisors, administrators, heads of doctoral programmes and (prospective) doctoral students.

The ELIA Leadership Symposium gathered leaders in the field of artistic education, thinkers, and researchers with extensive experience in the realm of artistic education. Among the active participants in this symposium was a representative from our Academy, the Assistant Rector and the initiator of this collaboration – Nina Araya. The “The Beginning of Now” symposium aimed to address global challenges such as the standard of living crisis, military conflicts, environmental hazards, and social injustice, and to explore how changes in the educational system can help students navigate these challenges.

The symposium invited participants to stimulate, experiment, exchange ideas, and develop new approaches to leadership in artistic education. Participants discussed new political ideologies and leadership theories, contributing to the evolution of thinking about radical changes in education.

The symposium also served as a platform for exploring new and alternative leadership models that could foster a new way of thinking. Initiatives launched at this symposium aimed to create a framework that would support ELIA’s strategic priorities in the future.

With the participation of the Kyiv Municipal Academy of Performing and Circus Arts and other artistic educational institutions from around the world, the symposium provided an opportunity to exchange ideas, present research projects and methodologies in artistic education, and contribute to the development of future education. It marked the beginning of something new, where all participants could contribute to shaping the future of education, “The Beginning of Now.”

We take pride in the fact that our Academy represented the institution admirably and has negotiated future exciting collaborations with international artistic institutes. Very soon, we will announce our next steps, initiatives, and collaborations.

We are thrilled to share with you the incredible success of the “Together. Circus Invitation” project, which recently took place in the enchanting city of Veszprém, Hungary. This event was nothing short of spectacular, filled with crazy-inspiring and wonderfully strange circus scenes that unfolded on the streets and public spaces of Veszprém.

During this captivating event, our talented circus artists took over various public spots, transforming them into mesmerizing stages. The performances featured breathtaking acrobatics in the air and on the ground, jaw-dropping juggling acts, graceful dancers, and mind-bending illusions that left the audience in awe. But the real stars of the show were none other than the participants themselves – the audience who joined in the magic!

• Trees in the park of Jutasi
• Surroundings of Foton cinema
• Óváros square
• Downtown/Kossuth utca

Protagonists:

• YOU! Yes, the audience played a vital role in this unforgettable experience, becoming an integral part of the performances.

The event unfolded on the following dates:

• 17th September: Óváros tér
• 20th September: FOTON became a hub of circus wonder
• 22nd September: The ‘Jutasi Piknik Circus Day’ was a highlight, featuring an array of circus programs. Together, we even built the ‘Human Mountain of Jutasi’!
• 23rd September: The grand finale – the BIG ACTION that brought everyone together to create something truly extraordinary!

All these incredible actions took place within the framework of Veszprém-Balaton 2023, European Capital of Culture. This event was proudly organized by the Circollektív projekt, Jutasi Kör, and the Inspiral Circus Center, with co-financing from the Creative Europe program of the European Union.

The circus magic in Veszprém was a resounding success, thanks to the dedication of our talented artists, the enthusiastic participation of the audience, and the support of our organizers.

The artistic director, Albin Warette, masterfully guided the performances, creating moments of wonder and joy that will be cherished forever.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who attended, participated, and supported this fantastic event. Your presence and enthusiasm made it truly special.

By joining the UAx Platform, KMAECPA will play a crucial role in establishing the UAx Sister School network, facilitating connections between Ukrainian higher arts institutions and ELIA members across Europe.

As part of this exciting collaboration, KMACPA will receive ELIA membership subsidies for 2024 and 2025, allowing active participation in ELIA’s international events and engagement with a robust community of over 280 higher arts education institutions from Europe and beyond. To kick-start this engagement, we are delighted to invite KMACPA to the ELIA Leadership Symposium in Manchester in October 2023.

Additionally, we are pleased to announce that KMAECPA students will have the opportunity to participate in the UAx Abakanowicz Fellowship Programme next year. This initiative will provide them with bursaries, reciprocal mentorship, and access to a vibrant UAx community to support their studies in Ukraine.
